🔎 HISTORY:

  • The Salon Express Tokyo is a modified 14-series passenger car with a seating system, was introduced in 1983 as the first European-style passenger car with an observation room for the Japanese National Railways. It featured a bold design and paint color that had not been seen in previous JNR vehicles, and boasted luxurious facilities such as a lounge with a bar counter that could also serve snacks, and private rooms for 3 to 6 people. It won the Pullman Ribbon Dress Award in 1984. It was a pioneer of the Joyful Trains and it had a large impact.
  • The "Salon Express Tokyo" was taken over by JR East following division and privatization, but in order to meet the high demand for tatami cars, it was remodeled in 1997 and reborn as the tatami passenger car "Series 14 Yutori."

  • Apart from the basic exterior, body paint and observation room, the facilities and interior were all renewed, and all private rooms, passenger compartment dividers, sofas and tables were removed, creating a tatami-style structure with stirrup flooring. In addition, the window arrangement was partially changed due to the addition of a closet room, lounge and telephone room, and the number of cars in the train was reduced from 7 to 6.

  • The "Yutori" will continue to be continued to operate as an event train and special group train, but was retired after its final commercial run on March 9, 2008.

  • The EF58 61 is a classic Japanese electric locomotive built in 1958 by Hitachi and Kawasaki for Japanese National Railways (JNR). It is part of the EF58 class, designed for express passenger service on mainline AC/DC electrified routes. With a Bo′Bo′Bo′ wheel arrangement and a top speed of 100 km/h, it became famous for hauling iconic trains such as the Tsubame and Amagi limited expresses. EF58 61 features distinctive front headlamp design and elegant styling, making it a favorite among rail fans. Today, it is preserved as a heritage locomotive, celebrated for its role in postwar Japanese rail history and its classic aesthetic.
